The COBOL language has been significantly enhanced by IBM since the major rewrite in the mid to late eighties (COBOL-85), and continues to be amongst the best Mainframe development languages for critical commercial and high volume applications. It continues to be upgraded today to leverage new architecture features of the IBM Z series hardware.
So why do we continually hear that we have to get rid of it ?
- We cannot find the skills - there is a very simple answer to this - training, training, training. This is what has been lacking over the last 20 years or
so from our experience. The challenge has always been to hire the best people - the language is irrelevant. And why do we assume that just because
someone has JAVA on their resume that they are instantly good programmers with an in-depth knowledge of the language and can be put straight to work to deliver optimal solutions within a Mainframe environment. To get the best output we must also train our JAVA programmers in the Mainframe world and according to our organisation's standards and environment so that they deliver the best possible solution.
It still comes down to training and good technical leadership.
